Malawi, China Sign Health Care Cooperation Agreement
This agreement marks the latest development in China's longstanding support for Malawi's health care system.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Malawi's Ministry of Health signed a memorandum of understanding with China's National Health Commission on Friday, strengthening cooperation in health care between the two nations, writes Wendi Mkandawire.
Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda praised the agreement, saying it "ushers in a new era of strong cooperation between China and Malawi in the critical field of health care."
The collaboration focuses on bolstering obstetrics and gynecology at Kamuzu Central Hospital through partnership with China's Xi'an Jiaotong University.
"This will enhance local capacity for treating critically ill pregnant women and improve diagnosis and treatment of gynecological conditions," Chiponda said.
The agreement coincides with the arrival of China's 11th medical team to Malawi, comprising 18 specialists in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and laboratory services.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Long Zhou expressed enthusiasm about the rapidly developing bilateral relationship, noting increasing political trust and fruitful practical cooperation.
China pledged to ensure the success of its medical team's work in Malawi and to strive for early implementation of the partnership hospital cooperation project.
The three-year framework will be guided by joint project proposals and annual plans developed by both countries.
