Malawi, China leaders discuss strategic partnership at FOCAC summit

BEIJING— Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, focusing on speedy project implementation and strategic partnership, writes Pemphero Musowa.
Chakwera expressed a "strong desire" to ensure that discussions on economic production, modernization, industrialization and infrastructural development lead to quick implementation.
"Malawi looks forward to shared prosperity via the Belt & Road Initiative, an infrastructure program that promises huge economic impact in the Global South when factored into the African Continental Free Trade Area structure," Chakwera said.
The Malawian leader emphasized the importance of elevating bilateral ties to a strategic partnership level.
