Malawi Chiefs Decry Youth Lawlessness, Demand Community Intervention Now
KARONGA, Malawi—Traditional leaders in Karonga District have raised urgent concerns about escalating youth lawlessness, particularly focusing on mob justice and disrespectful behaviour towards community elders, writes Lusekero Mwango.
During a solidarity meeting in Traditional Authority Mwakaboko, regional chiefs emphasized the critical need for collective action to address moral decay among young people.
Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa warned that youth behaviour is becoming increasingly problematic.
"Where there is love, respect, and unity, peace will prevail," he said.
"But our youths' behaviour is worrying."
Senior Chief Mwilang'omba called for a united approach between parents and traditional authorities.
"We must take responsibility to stop this lawlessness and instill a sense of respect and fear of God," he explained.
The meeting highlighted growing concerns about:
- Mob justice triggered by witchcraft accusations
- Lack of respect for elderly community members
- Erosion of traditional cultural values
Senior Chief Mwakaboko stressed that community involvement is crucial in addressing youth behavioral challenges and preserving cultural stability.
Chiefs unanimously agreed that immediate, coordinated intervention is necessary to guide young people toward more constructive community engagement.
