Malawi Bids Farewell to 'Soldier for the Poor' Lucius Banda

BALAKA, Malawi— Legendary Malawian musician, politician, and presidential advisor Lucius Banda was laid to rest Thursday in his home village of Sosola, Balaka District, drawing thousands of mourners including President Lazarus Chakwera, writes Jonathan Mzumazi.
Banda, known affectionately as "Soldier for the Poor," died Sunday in South Africa where he had been receiving medical treatment.
At exactly 3:11 PM, Banda's body was lowered into his final resting place in Sosola Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala.
Speaking on behalf of President Chakwera at Balaka stadium, Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda praised the late musician's legacy.
"Lucius Banda was a messenger for the ordinary and poor people," Chimwendo said. He announced that President Chakwera had contributed K3 million to the bereaved family and promised continued support.
UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati thanked President Chakwera and Banda's wife, Sunganani, for their support during his illness.
"He was a voice for the poor. He used to tell different stories through his music. As a nation, we shall all miss him," Kaliati said.
Former Minister of Information Gospel Kazako described Banda as "a minister for the poor, he was the voice of the voiceless."
Kazako also commended Sunganani Banda for her unwavering support throughout her husband's life, including during his imprisonment and recent hospitalization.
Fellow musician Mlaka Maliro shared his connection to Banda, saying, "It will be hard for me to forget the late Banda because of his impact on me. He promoted my music and invited me to join his Zembani Band."
Lucius Banda served as a presidential advisor on youth and arts until his death.
Born in June 1970, he is survived by his wife Sunganani and three children: Johnny, Mapiri, Ben, and Laura.
