Malawi Beach Soccer Coach Urges Vigilance After Narrow Win Against Burundi
The return leg, scheduled for Saturday at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima, will determine which team advances to the Beach Soccer AFCON 2024 in Egypt later this year.
SALIMA, Malawi — Malawi Beach Soccer team coach Willy Kumilambe is cautioning his squad against overconfidence following their narrow 7-6 victory over Burundi in the first leg of the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 qualifiers, writes Pemphero Musowa.
"It was a tough game," Kumilambe said.
"Our opponents had studied us from the Cosafa Beach Soccer Championship. We could see that when our playmakers had the ball, they were coming in strong to win it."
Captain Isaac Kajam led the scoring with four goals, while Dala Simba and Aubrain Nkhumbula each contributed one.
An own goal by Burundi rounded out Malawi's tally.
Despite the win, Kumilambe emphasized the tie is far from settled.
"We need to work hard. Burundi showed prowess," he warned.
