Malawi Announces Nominees for Castel Cup Soccer Awards
The categories are Player of the Tournament, Discovery of the Tournament, Top Goal Scorer and Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
BLANTYRE, Malawi- The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has released nominees for individual player awards in the Castel Cup soccer tournament, writes Benjamin Nyirenda.
The categories are Player of the Tournament, Discovery of the Tournament, Top Goal Scorer and Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
Nominees for Player of the Tournament are Hassan Kajoke and Lanjesi Nkhoma of Nyasa Big Bullets and Patrick Macheso of Silver Strikers.
The Top Goal Scorer will be one of six players who netted five goals each: Mphatso Phillimon, Peter Katsonga of MAFCO, Chiukepo Msowoya of Mighty Wanderers, Emmanuel Savieli of Bangwe All Stars, Gastin Simkonda of Moyale Barracks and Macheso.
Savieli and teammate defender Talandila Chigaula, along with Grem Lemela of Chitipa United, are up for Discovery of the Tournament.
Goalkeeper of the Tournament nominees are Rahman John of Bangwe All Stars, Pilirani Mapira of Silver Strikers and Richard Chimbamba of Bullets.
Winners will be announced at a Feb. 21 ceremony in Blantyre, said FAM competitions director Gomezgani Zakazaka.
A panel of national team coaches will select the winners.
Defending champion Nyasa Big Bullets won last year's inaugural Castel Cup title by defeating Silver Strikers in the final.
The Castel Malawi-sponsored tournament aims to provide more competitive matches and develop talent in Malawi's top league.
