Malawi Alliance Pushes for Expanded Reproductive Health Access, Abortion Rights
The alliance's push comes amid ongoing debates about reproductive rights in Malawi, where access to safe abortion remains limited.
DOWA, Malawi— The Malawi Sexual Reproductive Health Rights Alliance (MSRHRA) is calling for increased collaboration among stakeholders to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services for youths, women, and vulnerable groups, writes Wendi Mkandawire.
During a youth and women's engagement meeting on Wednesday at Kayembe Teachers Development Center in Dowa district, MSRHRA Coordinator Gertrude Kapyepye stressed the importance of collective action.
"We need to work together to advocate for the passing of the termination of the pregnancy bill," Kapyepye said.
The proposed legislation aims to provide safe abortion access for youths and women.
Kapyepye emphasized that collaboration among the government, civil society, and community leaders is crucial to effectively address the sexual and reproductive health needs of marginalized groups.
Participant Violet James highlighted the necessity of the bill, saying, "Passing the termination of pregnancy bill is essential to ensure that rural and economically disadvantaged women can readily access safe abortion."
The alliance's push comes amid ongoing debates about reproductive rights in Malawi, where access to safe abortion remains limited.
MSRHRA continues to advocate for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health rights, urging stakeholders to join their efforts in promoting access to quality information and services across the country.
