The goal came against the run of play, as the lower-league Iponga had dominated much of the match.
KARONGA, Malawi— Innocent Makawano's second-half strike propelled Mafco FC into the FDH Bank Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Iponga FC on Saturday, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Makawano found the net in the 62nd minute, connecting with Duncan Mwale's cross at Karonga Stadium.
The goal came against the run of play, as the lower-league Iponga had dominated much of the match.
Iponga, from the Northern Region Premier League, squandered several chances, including a 77th-minute penalty.
Mafco goalkeeper Christopher Mikuwa saved Charles Ndalama's spot-kick to preserve the lead.
"We are delighted to advance to the quarters; we really had to work hard to win," Mafco assistant coach Jimmy Mzunja said after the match.
Iponga FC coach Edwin Kawonga expressed disappointment: "It's a tough defeat to take as we dominated the game and should have won and gone through."
Mafco's organized defense withstood late pressure to secure their place in the last eight of the cup competition.
