MACRA Urges Nkhata Bay Chiefs to Promote Property Numbering Project
Senior Chief Kumbira welcomed the initiative, saying numbered properties will allow easier access for emergency and utility services.
NKHATA BAY, Malawi— The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority is urging traditional leaders and chiefs in Nkhata Bay district to raise awareness about an ongoing house and property numbering project, writes James Mizere Harawa.
"We are here to do some sensitization and to talk to faith leaders, our chiefs so that they can help us to carry on the messages to the communities to understand the whole concept called national addressing system concept and the house numbering concept," said MACRA Communication Manager Bright Sonani on Tuesday after meeting with local leaders.
Sonani said people need to understand their role in the project and take care of the numbered plates. Vandalism and theft of the property numbers has been a major challenge in other areas where this has been implemented.
"One of the challenges of such project is that we have physical infrastructures being stored and the big problem is vandalism and theft so we want people to take ownership of this structure so that they should not being vandalized or being stored," he said.
Senior Chief Kumbira welcomed the initiative, saying numbered properties will allow easier access for emergency and utility services.
"I have seen this exercise as a very important tool," he said. "Firstly we have already been given a street numbers but what was remaining is registering the names of houses so this will help in the way that provision of some social services like Police, Escom, ambulance will easy access this household each time they have face problems."
