MACRA Urges Malawians to Harness the Internet for Economic Gain
This appeal came during the commemoration of World Post Day, held in Nkhata Bay district under the theme "Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future."
Nkhata Bay, Malawi - The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has issued a call to action for Malawians to leverage the power of the internet to generate income, writes Rabecca Kaunda.
This appeal came during the commemoration of World Post Day, held in Nkhata Bay district under the theme "Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future."
MACRA's Director General, Daud Sulemani, underscored the importance of embracing the digital age, emphasizing the internet's role as the new global economy.
"The internet has become the new global economy. It is crucial that we start embracing this change for the growth of our country, rather than using the internet solely for social media. Let's harness it to generate income," said Sulemani.
Sulemani also revealed plans for a project called "Yathu Yathu data," which, with the collaboration of various stakeholders, aims to make cheaper internet accessible to people in rural areas.
Victor Sitima, Vice Chairperson for Courier and Postal Operators of Malawi, highlighted the introduction of the National Addressing System by MACRA.
This system is expected to allow many Malawians to provide accurate addresses, facilitating the timely delivery of goods to their doorsteps.
Sitima also called upon the government to improve road connectivity with neighboring countries, a move he believes will contribute to the country's development.
During the commemoration, MACRA's Director General handed over a Data Centre to the Nkhata Bay district council.
Edgar Chihana, the Council's Director of Planning and Development, commended the development, emphasizing its role in filling gaps related to internet access.
