MACRA to Enforce New Tech Equipment Standards at Border
The authority conducts widespread sensitization campaigns to educate stakeholders about the new regulations and their potential benefits.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority will implement new type approval regulations for telecommunications and ICT equipment starting December 1st, 2024, officials announced Thursday, writes Tionge Hara.
The regulations mandate that all telecommunications and ICT equipment, including laptops and computers, meet local and international standards before entering the Malawian market.
Nicholas Kanyenda, Deputy Director of Technologies and Standards at MACRA, said the authority will partner with the Malawi Revenue Authority to enforce the regulations at national borders.
"This partnership is crucial in preventing the influx of substandard products that could compromise the safety and quality of telecommunications services in Malawi," Kanyenda said.
The type approval process is a critical certification mechanism to ensure products comply with required standards. Kanyenda noted that the regulations will protect consumers and promote fair competition among manufacturers and suppliers.
MACRA's objectives include establishing a comprehensive type approval framework and guaranteeing that all electronic equipment meets necessary standards.
Cossam Chingancheke, MACRA's Quality Assurance Manager, emphasised the importance of maintaining equipment quality across the telecommunications sector.
The authority conducts widespread sensitization campaigns to educate stakeholders about the new regulations and their potential benefits.
As the December 1st deadline approaches, MACRA continues its efforts to inform the public and industry participants about the upcoming changes in equipment importation and certification requirements.
