MACRA Launches Massive ICT Lab Initiative in Malawian Schools
MACRA aims to construct one ICT laboratory in every constituency by December 2024, marking a significant step toward digital inclusion in Malawi's education system.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is spearheading a nationwide project to construct 75 smart information and communication technology (ICT) laboratories in Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSS) across Malawi, writes Esther Banda.
The initiative, dubbed "Connect a School" (CAS), aims to bridge the digital divide in the country's education sector.
MACRA Director General Daud Suleman emphasized the project's focus on inclusivity.
"This project is built on the principle of inclusivity, ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing digital services and technologies," Suleman said.
The project's first phase benefits 75 schools, including 74 secondary schools and one primary school. A second phase will extend to an additional 120 schools, comprising 108 secondary and 12 primary institutions.
Each smart ICT laboratory will have 60 computers, and schools will receive 20 computers and three years of internet connectivity.
Suleman reported rapid construction progress, with many laboratories reaching the window and roofing stages.
President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera recently inspected the construction at Nkumaniza CDSS in Chikwakwa, underscoring the importance of ICT laboratories for socio-economic growth.
