MACRA Launches Campus Radio at Shareworld University, Stresses Regulatory Compliance
MACRA has licensed six of 10 targeted universities for the project, with four remaining institutions yet to receive licenses.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) launched its "Campus Radio Project" at Shareworld University on Friday to enhance practical training in radio content production and digital multimedia platforms across public universities, writes Esther Banda.
MACRA Director General Daud Suleman said the authority invested K50 million in the project at Shareworld.
"We want the campus radio to be relevant to the communities surrounding the colleges," Suleman said.
"We don't want them to compete with the community radio stations but to become the first contact point for SMEs, students, and the people living around those campus radio stations to access information."
Suleman warned that MACRA could revoke licenses for noncompliance with regulations.
"This is a regulated space," he said.
"The lines are drawn by the regulator and as a player,, you have to play by the rules."
Dr. Jerry Jana, chairperson of Shareworld University Council, encouraged local youth to take advantage of the opportunity to develop their skills.
"We will ensure that our students, faculty, and external producers make the most of this facility, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence while sharing with others," Jana said.
