MACRA Launches Campaign to Secure Malawians' WhatsApp Accounts
Under the hashtag #SecureYourWhatsAppMw, MACRA is committed to raising awareness and fostering a safer digital environment for all Malawians.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has rolled out a new initiative to combat rising WhatsApp hacking and fraud cases across the country, writes Ireen Kayira.
The "Secure Your WhatsApp" campaign aims to educate users on enabling two-step verification, a crucial security measure to protect personal information and prevent unauthorized access.
"The rise in WhatsApp-related fraud has seen scammers gaining access to accounts and impersonating users to solicit money from their contacts," MACRA said in a statement on Thursday.
The regulatory body urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of any requests before sending money.
"To safeguard your WhatsApp account, enable Two-Step Verification by following these steps: Open WhatsApp and go to Settings, Tap Account, Select Two-step verification, and Follow the prompts to complete the process," the statement read.
Lilongwe-based businessman Patrick Banda praised the campaign as a positive step toward creating a safer digital space.
"This is exactly what we need right now. Many people don't realize how vulnerable they are online, and educating users on security features like Two-Step Verification is the way forward," Banda said.
