MACRA Expands National Addressing System to Ease Location Identification
This initiative represents a significant step in modernizing Malawi's infrastructure and improving service delivery across various sectors.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi — The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is set to implement a nationwide project tagging houses with postcode numbers, street names, and road signposts to facilitate easier location identification, writes Noel Chimwala.
Kondwani Kachika, MACRA's Director of Postal and E-commerce, unveiled the plans Tuesday during a meeting with traditional chiefs, members of parliament, ward councillors, and District Executive Committee members in Chikwawa District.
"We are embarking on this project, which intends to allocate an address to every house across the country," Kachika said.
"We expect all stakeholders to understand the benefits of the project and embrace it."
Despite funding challenges, Kachika said the project would be rolled out in many districts. He added that MACRA plans to bring more partners, such as banks, on board.
Chikwawa District Council Chairperson Councillor Martin Goche welcomed the initiative, saying it would enhance the delivery of essential social services by simplifying location identification.
"We commend MACRA for this project as it is going to ease identification of places by providing physical addresses through house numbering, street naming, and postcodes," Goche said.
The National Addressing System Project began in 2016 in Blantyre city and is now expanding to all districts across Malawi.
