MACRA Chief Defends Monitoring Technology in Mzuzu Address
MZUZU, Malawi — Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority Director General Daud Suleman defended the agency's digital monitoring system during a public lecture, writes Tionge Hara.
Suleman described the so-called "spy machine" as a protective measure against digital threats rather than an invasion of privacy.
"This technology will help protect Malawians from various threats, including the use of fake or stolen phones from other countries," Suleman told students.
The MACRA chief specifically addressed health concerns, claiming the monitoring system would prevent "the risk of cancerous diseases allegedly linked to certain mobile phones."
The March 6 lecture focused on "the intersection of laws, technology, and myths in the digital age," including digital rights issues.
Dr. Lidia Chindo Mafuta, chairperson of the university's Public Lecture Committee, praised the presentation.
"The public lecture was very beneficial for our students, who gained valuable insights into the intersection of technology, laws, and digital rights," Mafuta said.
"We would like to request MACRA to come back to Mzuni soon."
MACRA also met with civil society organizations on March 5 to discuss digital rights, following a similar session in Blantyre.
