Locals Urged to Fund Police Station Construction

THYOLO, Malawi - Police have urged the communities around Bvumbwe to speed up the construction works of Bvumbwe Police Station, saying the absence of the law enforcers in the area has negatively affected security matters for the past years, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Limbe Police Station Officer-In-Charge Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Edwin Munkhambo said the sentiments on Wednesday during a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a K314 million police station.
He said the law enforcers abandoned the area in January 2012 after a fracas between the police and the communities around the police station.
ACP Mankhumbo also said the area in question has no infrastructure for the police to occupy and use.
"Thanks to the communities for their decision to build a police structure which will be in the area to provide security," said the O/C.
Earlier Chairperson for the Construction Committee Leo Chimbwanya said that the project is solely funded by the locals within Bvumbwe.
He revealed that the committee has targeted an amount of K314 million for the whole construction works which they wished to be completed within 6 months.
"So far we only have K50 million which will take us through the groundbreaking, foundation up to the slable level," said Chimbwanya.
The chairperson is appealing to political, traditional leaders, non-governmental organizations, faith leaders, businesses communities around to at least join hands so that the project is completed on time.
