Local Student's Philanthropy Aids Malawi's Vulnerable
As Moyo's Kumwamba Kumapanga za Ine initiative gains traction, many hope it will inspire more acts of homegrown philanthropy in a nation striving for inclusive development.
MZUZU, Malawi- A university student in northern Malawi is being hailed as a beacon of hope for using his modest means to support some of the country's most vulnerable people through acts of grassroots philanthropy, writes Frank Mwale.
James Ziggy Moyo, a 26-year-old final year student at the University of Livingstonia, founded the "Kumwamba Kumapanga za Ine" initiative to raise funds for underprivileged students at risk of dropping out due to financial constraints.
"I thought of less privileged students at the campus who lack a lot of things to help them in their studies, so with the little help I get I manage to help some," Moyo said.
Through sales of branded merchandise, Moyo has managed to pay outstanding tuition fees and provide upkeep for several struggling students, transforming their lives.
"I am a human rights second year student and hail from Chitipa. I was on the verge of being withdrawn from the school because I couldn't manage the fees, but through his help here I am," said Queen Mkumbwa, one of the beneficiaries.
But Moyo's philanthropy extends beyond the university.
The proceeds have also enabled him to purchase essential supplies for impoverished communities grappling with food insecurity.
"I also purchase various assorted items to support even various people in various communities who are starving," Moyo added.
Faculty members have commended the student's selfless efforts which have given many a lifeline amid challenging economic conditions in Malawi.
"It's truly inspiring to see a young man taking such initiative to uplift his peers and communities with the little he has," said Professor Blessings Chinsinga. "His actions embody the spirit of Ubuntu."
