LILONGWE, MALAWI — Lilongwe Shift, in partnership with Wind Ride Aeros, has launched a waste management initiative in Chinsapo Market, using drone technology to collect data on waste disposal, writes Judgement Katika.
The initiative aims to enhance proper waste management in all city markets.
Lilongwe District Commissioner Roford Palani commended Lilongwe Shift and Wind Ride Aeros for their efforts in complementing the government's waste management campaign.
He acknowledged the challenge of waste management in Lilongwe, with numerous markets and a large population.
Palani stated, "Many people are unaware of how to effectively manage waste. They dump it but do not take the time to properly dispose of it, so it is a problem in Lilongwe. We appreciate the awareness campaign and sensitization efforts of Lilongwe Shift, particularly in Chinsapo Market."
He further mentioned that the Lilongwe District has an environmental department with a budget dedicated to waste management.
Uppeh Assedi, a member of Lilongwe Shift, explained that the group conducted a survey in Chinsapo Market to assess the waste situation and gather data.
The findings revealed poor waste disposal practices among residents, which will inform their future decisions and actions.
Moses Fuleya, Co-founder and CEO of Wind Ride Aeros, expressed the passion of Lilongwe Shift and Wind Ride Aeros to drive change in waste management.
He highlighted the use of drone technology to collect data that will aid in decision-making for proper waste management.
The waste management initiative in Chinsapo Market is the first step towards enhancing waste management practises in all city markets.
Lilongwe Shift and Wind Ride Aeros aim to use the collected data to advocate for improved waste management.
The campaign was funded by Save the Children.
