Likoma's Young Football Star Seeks Support to Advance Her Career
Violet Scott, a 13-year-old student at St. Peter's Primary School, expressed her desire to showcase her talent beyond her remote island home.
LIKOMA, Malawi — A promising young footballer from Likoma Island is calling for support to help develop her career and promote girls' football in the area, writes Oliver Malibisa.
Violet Scott, a 13-year-old student at St. Peter's Primary School, expressed her desire to showcase her talent beyond her remote island home.
"In Likoma, we don't have girls' football teams, so my wish is to go to other districts so that I can show off my talent and become a well-known player in Malawi and other countries in the world," Scott said.
The young athlete is seeking training kits and hopes to see the establishment of girls' football teams and tournaments in Likoma to uncover hidden talents.
Samson Nyirenda, the District Education Sports Officer, said discussions are underway to invite a prominent Malawian women's football star to serve as a role model in the district.
"Well-wishers should follow proper channels through working hand in hand with the district education sports office," Nyirenda advised.
In response to Scott's plea, FDH Bank's Likoma Branch manager Henry Kudzala has pledged to purchase a pair of sports shoes for her.
Additionally, the Likoma Education Office has donated a football to support her efforts.
