Likoma island festival set for October
Businesses are gearing up for the influx of visitors with tours, lodging and food.
LIKOMA, Malawi - The Likoma Festival will take place October 12-15 this year, according to the Ministry of Tourism's calendar of events, writes Oliver Malibisa.
"The aim is to promote Likoma," said Patrick Ulele Chikoti, one of the event's directors.
Chikoti emphasized that the festival will "help business people invest in Likoma in line with Malawi 2063."
Chriss Stevens, owner of Ulisa Bay Lodge, said he is "excited for the influx of customers" the event will bring and will ensure everything is prepared by October.
Mercy Sauli, a local youth tour guide, looks forward to increased revenue during the festival.
The Likoma Tour Guides Association is mobilizing boats, bicycles, motorcycles and cars to ensure smooth operations, Sauli said.
Anita Chiunda, a local restaurant owner, assured customers that local delicacies like butterfish, chambo, cassava leaves and chicken will be plentiful.
The four-day festival will feature bands, traditional dances, swimming, a parade and sightseeing.
Organizers expect around 12,500 attendees from within Malawi and abroad.
