Likoma Island Certifies First Group of Professional Football Referees
The Northern Region Football Association and Likoma Football Association jointly funded the training initiative.
LIKOMA ISLAND, Malawi— Eighteen referees earned professional certification Monday to officiate football matches on Likoma Island, marking the first such program for the island community, writes Mercy Phri.
The newly certified officials completed a comprehensive training program and passed the required examinations.
Three candidates failed to qualify from the original group of 21 test-takers.
"These referees are now equipped to officiate games professionally and responsibly," said District Sports Officer Sam Nyirenda.
"This certification provides an opportunity to officiate at the regional level."
Ruth Chirwa, one of the program's few female graduates, plans to use her certification to encourage more women to enter officiating.
"As a female referee, I will continue officiating matches properly and hope to inspire other women," she said.
The district plans to launch referee fitness programs and a Football Association of Malawi D Coaching Course in 2025.
