LIKOMA, Malawi— The Ministry of Education has endorsed various initiatives implemented by Likoma District to promote education, including quizzes, debates, teacher awards, and school sports activities, writes Oliver Malibisa.
Zilange Mhango, an official from the Likoma District Education Office, said these initiatives have improved education standards in the district.
"Awarding Standard 8 teachers motivates them to work hard in discharging their duties," Mhango said.
He thanked Member of Parliament Ashem Songwe for sponsoring a quiz competition with K4.1 million.
Ministry of Education spokesperson Mphatso Nkuonera agreed with Mhango, stating that authorities have a role in supporting government efforts to promote education.
Nkuonera also highlighted broader government initiatives, saying, "The government has started the process of recruiting 4,200 auxiliary teachers to be deployed to 32 education districts, besides already hiring 2,605 role model female teachers as learner mentors."
He added that the government has constructed 1,000 sanitary rooms and handed them over to various primary schools to promote girls' education.
