Likoma Boxer Boston Mhaji Prepares for National Boxing Competition in Lilongwe
Likoma boxer Boston Mhaji gears up for the national boxing competition in Lilongwe, aiming to accumulate winnings and fulfill his dreams.
LIKOMA, MALAWI — Likoma-based boxer Boston Mhaji is eagerly preparing for the upcoming four-day national boxing competition in Lilongwe, set to commence from August 25 to August 28, 2023, writes Oliver Malibisa.
In an interview with Africabrief, Mhaji expressed his determination to accumulate winnings in his third professional fight, following a victorious debut and a subsequent loss.
He aspires to become the next Malawi's Isaac Chilemba but acknowledges the need for continued support from the Malawi Boxing Association (MABA) to achieve his dreams.
"I have fought two bouts; winning one and losing one, but participating in the next assignment, being the third engagement of my career, is an opportunity to accumulate my winnings," said Mhaji.
The 21-year-old boxer, currently training in Mzuzu, appealed to well-wishers for support in acquiring training kits such as boots and gloves, as he cannot afford them on his own.
Adamson Chunda, the Chairperson for Amateur Boxers in Likoma Island, praised Mhaji's skills and expressed confidence in his ability to face other challengers in the ring.
Chunda also encouraged the island's youth to participate in various sports disciplines, including boxing, to contribute to the growth of the sport in Malawi.
Clifton Botha, one of Mhaji's supporters, expressed confidence in the young boxer's potential for success but cautioned him against complacency in his preparations.
Mhaji will be among 30 boxers from the northern region of Malawi who will join 60 others from the South and Central regions to compete in the national competition, starting this weekend.
