LCC to reconstruct 'pathetic' Area 18-Senti road
DEC Projects Manager Ellard Malonda said the company is prepared to reconstruct the road properly.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Lilongwe City Council (LCC) says it will reconstruct the Area 18-Senti road in Lilongwe city which is currently in a "pathetic" state, writes Moses Nyirenda.
In an interview on Wednesday in Lilongwe, Mayor for Lilongwe city Councillor Richard Banda said the road was not constructed properly by the previous government, leading the council to reconstruct it.
“This road was constructed about three years ago during the previous government but it was not constructed in a normal standard and that is why as council we have come again so that we can rehabilitate this road,” Banda said.
He added the council budgeted K1.7 billion for the reconstruction, but expects costs to rise following currency devaluation.
Banda said the council will closely monitor the project to avoid substandard work.
“We will be very strict to supervise this project so that at least there should not be any corruption,” he said.
The council has contracted DEC Construction Limited to begin work in March 2024.
DEC Projects Manager Ellard Malonda said the company is prepared to reconstruct the road properly.
“We are ready to reconstruct it up to the required standard so that it should benefit people of Senti and surrounding areas,” Malonda said.
Member of Parliament Alfred Jiya praised the council's decision to reconstruct the road, calling its current state "very pathetic."
“The reconstruction of the road will ease the mobility challenge among Area 18 and Senti residents upon its completion especially during the rainy season,” Jiya said.
