Lawyer offers pro bono help to widow seeking compensation for husband's death
Despite assurances from police and stakeholders about compensation, including educational support for her children, nothing materialized.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi — A Chikwawa district woman's eight-year quest for government compensation may finally see progress, writes Moses Thole.
Damaris Lyson seeks restitution after her husband, a police forum member, was accidentally shot dead by ADMARC guards during a fracas at a depot in Nsanje district in 2016.
"My husband met his fate while providing security," Lyson said. "ADMARC guards fired, accidentally hitting my husband, who died on the spot."
Despite assurances from police and stakeholders about compensation, including educational support for her children, nothing materialized.
After social media influencer Dorothy Kingston visited Lyson, lawyer Felix Tambulasi volunteered to represent her pro bono.
"When my husband died, my life changed," Lyson explained. "I have many unsupported children."
Kingston expressed happiness about Tambulasi's offer, with the case expected to start soon.
