Lawmaker Vows to End Salty Water Woes
Mia aims to eliminate the problem through expanded access to piped water systems, which provide safer drinking water by filtering out salt.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi - Chikwawa Nkombezi Member of Parliament Abida Sidik Mia has conceded that some areas in the constituency have access to salty water, a problem she plans to address by providing piped water, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Mia, who also serves as Malawi's Minister of Water and Sanitation, disclosed the issue Monday in an interview.
"Yes, I know some boreholes are supplying salty water to communities, which will end this year," she promised.
The minister said piped water systems already exist in parts of the constituency like Khisimisi, John and Therere, and she will reach remaining areas with new projects so residents have water free of salt.
Senior Group Village Headman Goma, whose area falls under Senior Chief Ngabu, praised the lawmaker for implementing many projects across the region but agreed some villages still rely on salty water sources.
Mia aims to eliminate the problem through expanded access to piped water systems, which provide safer drinking water by filtering out salt.
Her pledge comes as a relief to families forced to rely on boreholes pumping unusable water.
"The days of salty water are numbered," Mia said.
