Lack of Unity Hinders Police Operations in Malawi, Says Inspector General
Addressing the gathering, Inspector General Yolam stressed the critical importance of unity within the police force.
Zomba, Malawi - Concerns about the lack of unity among police officers in Malawi emerged as a significant hindrance to effective police operations in the country, writes Peter Davieson.
This revelation came to light during an interface session held at Zomba Police College, where officers from the Zomba region engaged with the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Merlyn Yolam.
Addressing the gathering, Inspector General Yolam stressed the critical importance of unity within the police force.
She issued a stern warning against any form of corruption and gender-based violence, firmly condemning the unauthorized modification of police uniforms.
"Unity is the cornerstone of our effectiveness. When we share a common direction and goal, we are a stronger force for peace in our nation. Despite our individual differences, our unity as police officers should remain unwavering," emphasized Inspector General Yolam.
She also expressed her disapproval of officers refusing transfers, emphasizing that such changes can offer valuable experiences and personal growth.
Furthermore, Inspector General Yolam pledged to provide house allowances for officers residing outside designated residential areas, and promotions would be awarded based on merit.
Dan Phiri, the Regional Executive Chairperson for Eastern Region Community Policing, commended the existing collaboration between the police and the community.
However, he urged the Inspector General to address issues related to promotions and uniforms promptly, underlining their pivotal role in boosting job satisfaction.
Phiri also emphasized the need for improved transportation for community policing initiatives.
In her closing remarks, the Inspector General encouraged police officers to join the Police Sacco (Savings and Credit Cooperative) to enhance their financial well-being.
As a gesture of appreciation, she received gifts from various police departments.
The interface aimed to foster better communication and understanding among officers and leadership in the Malawi Police Service.
The goal is to enhance overall police operations and effectiveness in the country.
