Mangochi, Malawi - Kondwani Nankhumwa, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has fulfilled his pledge to construct a tombstone for Senior Chief Mponda IIII, writes Bridget Mwanoka.
Nankhumwa made the commitment to construct a tombstone for the fallen chief in December last year when he visited Mponda Headquarters in Mangochi to condole with the family following the death of Senior Chief Mponda IIII.
Four months down the line, the construction of the tombstone is nearing completion, and Nankhumwa, who also serves as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South, visited the district to appreciate the works.
"I'm delighted to see the progress of the work. Mponda chieftaincy has a rich history, and that spirit of tolerance triggered me to do something for this family," said Nankhumwa.
On behalf of the family, Group Village Headman Malunda, who is the acting Senior Chief Mponda, hailed Nankhumwa for fulfilling his promise to construct the tombstone, saying it is an enormous contribution that will forever impact their chieftaincy.
Nankhumwa was accompanied on the trip by, among other dignitaries, party officials, and Members of Parliament, Joyce Chitsulo of Mwanza West Constituency and Gertrude Nankhumwa of Blantyre Kabula.
