Kenyan Poet Ngartia Returns with 'Dai Verse' Shows

NAIROBI, Kenya— Acclaimed Kenyan poet and artist Ngartia is making a return to the performance poetry scene after nearly a decade with his "Dai Verse: Poetry for the People" shows on April 21, writes Winston Mwale.
The one-time, two-show event will feature Ngartia performing spoken word pieces spanning his career in English, Sheng' and Kiswahili, accompanied by live music from Chemutai Sage, Vini Ngugi, Timothy Arinaitwe, M³, Septad and Sho.
"This artistic reintroduction, in varied formats, covers a range of themes," said a statement.
"It will be performed in English, Sheng', and Kiswahili, assisted by the musical stylings of several acclaimed artists."
Directed by Nyokabi Macharia, known for her work on "Bog Mouth," "Country Queen" and "County 49," the shows promise to give audiences "a riveted" experience, according to press materials.
"Ngartia is a writer, actor and director based in Nairobi, Kenya. He started out in the performance poetry space and has found his way into Theatre, Film and TV," his biography states.
"His work explores different ideas and experimental forms, mostly related to identity and historical placement."

Ngartia co-founded the "Too Early For Birds" Kenyan history-inspired stage productions. Njoroge says he "has an unwavering dedication to the art of storytelling" through film, TV and other mediums.
