Katoto Super Market Launches K1 Million District Netball League in Mzuzu
The league, announced during a grand ceremony at the Katoto Netball Court in Mzuzu on Saturday, will see all Netball teams in the city competing for the coveted title.
Mzuzu, Malawi — After a decade-long drought of Netball sponsorship in Mzuzu, Katoto Super Market has stepped in with a generous contribution of K1 million to launch the District Netball League, writes Susan Moyo.
The league, announced during a grand ceremony at the Katoto Netball Court in Mzuzu on Saturday, will see all Netball teams in the city competing for the coveted title.
Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka, the owner of Katoto Super Market, spoke passionately about the initiative, saying, "We are injecting this money into the Netball league because we want to identify the hidden talents among the girls in the city. The league will provide the platform for the girls to expose and showcase their talents."
Netball legend and guest of honour Mary Waya, expressed her gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the tournament's significance.
She stated, "Years have passed without any sponsorship for Netball in this city. This tournament will motivate girls to become the next National Netball players. Additionally, the league will keep them engaged, protecting them from engaging in negative behaviours."
A Committee Member of the Mzuzu District Netball League, Sibongile Tembo, echoed her appreciation and called upon local companies and individuals to follow Dr. Mtumbuka's example.
She said, "We have several companies here in the North, and we are, therefore, asking them and people of goodwill to emulate what Dr. Mtumbuka has done."
The launch of the league was celebrated with a ceremonial match, where the Golden Balls team defeated ShopRite Sisters with a score of 25-15 baskets.
The Katoto Super Market District Netball League aims to reinvigorate Netball in Mzuzu and serve as a platform for nurturing young talent and promoting sportsmanship among the city's girls.
This significant investment promises to have a lasting impact on the community and the future of Netball in the region.
