MZUZU, Malawi- Katoto Super Market has doubled its sponsorship of the Mzuzu District Netball League to K2 million after a "successful season," company founder Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka announced Saturday, writes Victor Musongole.
Speaking at the K1 million prize presentation, Mtumbuka said the increased sponsorship will allow more teams to register and boost competition.
"We are impressed with the level of competition and administration of the league, so after discussing with netball legend Mary Waya, we will provide officiating and technical courses to improve teams' performance," Mtumbuka said.
"We want to see players from this league playing for the national team."
Waya, guest of honor at the event, said she has hope netball will improve with training and discipline.
"We have done several courses in 28 districts and plan to finish the remaining six. This will improve netball, but we need disciplined players," Waya said.
Netball Association of Malawi technical director Samuel Kanyenda lamented the lack of competitions but said the league has showcased talent.
"This region has potential, but lack of competitions has been a major setback. With these competitions, there is hope netball will bounce back," Kanyenda said.
Golden Balls received K200,000 for finishing first, while second-placed Chipea Creepers got K150,000.
Shoprite Queens finished third, and several players received awards.
