Karonga United Advances in Castel Challenge Cup with 3-0 Win
The victory erases memories of last year's early exit for Karonga United, who were knocked out at this stage by Ekwendeni United.
KARONGA, Malawi— Karonga United secured their place in the last 32 of the Castel Challenge Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chipolopolo Boys at Karonga Stadium on Saturday, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Ernest Chisamba netted twice, and Blessings Mwalilino added another as the home side dominated the match from start to finish.
The win marks a successful return to their home ground for Karonga United after serving a three-game ban imposed by the Football Association of Malawi for fan misconduct.
Chisamba opened the scoring in the 21st minute, connecting with a cross from Mwalilino.
The provider turned scorer just before halftime, finishing a through-ball from Robert Luhanga.
Chisamba completed his brace six minutes after the break, set up again by Mwalilino.
Karonga United coach Oscar Kaunda praised his team's approach: "I am really happy that my players didn't underestimate our opponents. It can sometimes happen when facing minnows, but we took it seriously, and that's what pleased me the most."
The visitors, who play in the Northern Region Premier League, struggled to mount any significant offence against their superior opponents.
Chipolopolo Boys coach Komani Vinkhumbo acknowledged the gap in quality, stating, "The difference in level and quality was just too much for our boys, but we'll learn from this and compete better next time."
The victory erases memories of last year's early exit for Karonga United, who were knocked out at this stage by Ekwendeni United.
They now look forward to the round of 32 as they continue their cup campaign.
