Karonga Teams Set for Nyasa Capital Cup Finals
Nyasa Capital Finance is sponsoring the cup with K23.3 million kwacha per region, totaling K70 million kwacha for all three regions.
KARONGA, Malawi - The Northern Region Football Association's Nyasa Capital Finance Cup will feature two Karonga-based teams, Baka City and Iponga FC, in the finals following their victories in the semifinals on Wednesday, writes Victor Musongole.
Baka City defeated Mzimba United 3-0.
Washington Msiska scored twice, with the other goal coming from Honest Mwakawale. Meanwhile, their neighbours Iponga FC ousted Ekwaiweni Tafika Sports 2-0 on goals from Kennedy Mwakabaghe and Wakisa Mwalughali.
For the past three seasons, the cup has had new semifinalists each year, proving to be one of the toughest competitions in the northern region.
The association's general secretary Masiya Nyasulu said the cup has been highly competitive and exciting as no team has defended the title since it started two seasons ago.
"So far we have witnessed good football and I agree with you that no team has reached the semifinals twice, which shows it's highly competitive," Nyasulu said.
"The third place match between Mzimba United and Ekwaiweni Tafika Sports Academy is expected on Dec. 16, while the finals between Baka City and Iponga are set for Dec. 17 pending confirmation from the sponsors," Nyasulu added.
The champion will receive over K1.6 million kwacha. Mayamiko Stars are the previous winners.
