Karonga Farmers Demand Fair Trade Practices for Produce
Sub T/A Mwangolera, representing Paramount Chief Kyungu, described the formulation of the association as a gamechanger for local farmers and their produce.
KARONGA, Malawi— The Karonga Farm Produce Buyers Association (KFPBA) has called on the Karonga District Council to enforce strict regulations for both local and international business operators in a bid to protect the interests of local farmers, writes Lusekero Mhango.
The call was made on Tuesday during an interface meeting that the association held with its members, chiefs and council officials from the district, with the aim of ensuring that indigenous farmers receive fair benefits from their labor.
"It is crucial that our farmers see the rewards of their hard work. Proper licensing and taxation will not only benefit the farmers but also boost the district's development," said Francis Mwambilya, KFPBA chairperson.
Highlighting disparities, Mwambilya noted that neighboring countries are gaining significant revenue through proper taxation of agricultural businesses, while Karonga seems to lag due to lax enforcement.
"Foreign business operators need to adhere to our regulations. Without proper licenses, they undermine our development efforts," he added.
Youngs Alfred Nyirenda, director of agriculture environment and natural resources, commended the association's initiative and assured the association of the council's commitment in advancing agricultural development in Karonga for the benefit of all farmers.
Sub T/A Mwangolera, representing Paramount Chief Kyungu, described the formulation of the association as a gamechanger for local farmers and their produce.
"This engagement with our farmers has been vital for community growth. As such, the KFPBA's actions are a positive step towards ensuring that our local farmers thrive and earn something for their hard work," Mwangolera explained.
