Karonga District Urges Collaboration to Secure Children's Education Rights
The Day of the African Child, observed annually on June 16, honors those who fought for freedom in South Africa. It was adopted in 1991.
KARONGA, Malawi— Authorities in Karonga district are calling for increased stakeholder collaboration to ensure every child's right to education is realized, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Vincent Bwinga of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) made the appeal Saturday during the district's Day of the African Child commemoration at Chisumbu Primary School.
Bwinga noted that despite education efforts, some communities still don't grasp the importance of schooling, leading to child marriages and labor.
"We're making great strides in promoting education rights for all children. However, we need to go further, especially in enforcing laws," he said.
Henry Mshanga, Karonga District Social Welfare Officer, described the event as significant for reflecting on program effectiveness.
"This day allows us to get feedback from children on whether programs are improving their right to education," Mshanga explained.
Eda Nirenda, a 13-year-old student and guest of honor, urged fellow learners to value education as a path out of poverty and child marriage.
The commemoration, featuring traditional performances and speeches, was held under the theme "Promoting Quality and Inclusive Education for all Children in Malawi, Act Now."
