Karonga Council Launches K77 Million Drainage Project to Combat Flooding
The council plans to desilt existing drains while adding new drainage infrastructure.
KARONGA, Malawi — The Karonga District Council started construction Thursday on a K77 million drainage project aimed at preventing floods that have repeatedly damaged the northern trading town's market area, writes Lusekero Mhango.
The District Development Fund project includes building an 854-meter main drain from St. Mary's to the town roundabout, along with additional drainage channels throughout the commercial district.
"We are committed to ensuring that our town is free from flooding," said George Mponda, the council's public relations officer.
He acknowledged the work has faced delays due to fuel shortages and equipment failures.
Market vendors have reported significant inventory losses from previous flooding during rainy seasons.
"The old drains had caused numerous challenges for vendors," said Godwin Gha'mbi, chairperson of the Karonga Market.
The council plans to desilt existing drains while adding new drainage infrastructure.
Officials urged vendors to maintain the system by preventing waste disposal in the channels.
"As vendors, we will do our part to ensure that the new drains are properly maintained," Gha'mbi said.
