Kalipano Hotel: A New Gem in Malawi's Hospitality Industry
This establishment, located in a tranquil rural setting, offers an astonishing blend of natural beauty, serene surroundings, and charming chalets set amidst calm waters.
Dowa, Malawi-In the heart of Madisi, Dowa, approximately 70 km from the bustling capital city of Lilongwe, a new name has emerged in Malawi's hospitality industry - Kalipano Hotel, write Christopher Jimu and Winston Mwale.
This establishment, located in a tranquil rural setting, offers an astonishing blend of natural beauty, serene surroundings, and charming chalets set amidst calm waters.
This picturesque retreat is the brainchild of Dr. Napoleon Dzombe, a renowned philanthropist and former "Man of the Year" as recognized by Nation Publications Limited.
To bring this vision to life, Kalipano Hotel has entered into a five-year partnership with Sunbird, one of Malawi's leading hospitality service providers, to manage the facility.
In an interview with AfricaBrief, Dr. Napoleon Dzombe explained their decision to subcontract the management of Kalipano Hotel to Sunbird, stating, "We have a lot on our plate. We cannot just keep everything to ourselves, so Sunbird should run the hotel. We have signed a five-year contract starting this year, and depending on the way they run it, we will decide the future of this partnership. We are excited, and so far, the takeoff has been smooth, and we hope for better things in the future."
One of the unique features of Kalipano Hotel is the man-made lake around which chalets are nestled.
This serene setting provides a spectacular backdrop for guests to enjoy the tranquilly of nature. Moreover, boats have been deployed on this "lake," adding to the enchanting experience for visitors.
Dr. Dzombe expressed his passion for the local community, stating, "We thought of making a difference in an area away from Lake Malawi. We have water in Madisi, and as someone passionate about his roots, I thought this was an ideal place to build a hotel. I cannot give people money, but the visitors to the hotel will bring money, and when leaving, they will be buying items from the locals, hence financial independence."
Visitors have already started to flock to Madisi, with the presence of Kalipano Hotel breathing new life into the area.
Local farmers, like Nixon Kambwembwe, who hails from SAFI, an agricultural school adjacent to the hotel, are experiencing a transformation in their lives.
Kambwembwe stated, "We are selling a lot of things, like produce and livestock, such as chickens, to tourists, and the future is brighter. We know that in two years, this place will grow tremendously."
Currently, Kalipano Hotel offers 54 operational rooms, and by December, an additional 72 rooms will be ready for use.
Furthermore, more conference rooms are in the pipeline, ensuring that this charming rural retreat continues to thrive and expand, bringing economic opportunities to the local community and a delightful escape for visitors seeking respite in the heart of Malawi.
