Joyce Banda Commends Efforts to Assist Cyclone Freddy Survivors
Jane Masamba, one of the survivors and beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude to the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation for their efforts to reconstruct their homes.
ZOMBA, Malawi —Joyce Banda, former president of Malawi, expressed her appreciation for the humanitarian efforts to assist survivors of Cyclone Freddy during an inspection visit to Chisi Traditional Authority in Mwambo, Zomba District, writes Peter Ngwenyama.
Banda inspected 30 households that are currently under construction for survivors of Cyclone Freddy in the area.
She commended the support received from Good Ambassador's Initiatives, which received a donation of over 500 million Malawian kwacha from Dozy Mmobuosi and the Tingo Foundation.
This generous contribution is dedicated to building resilient houses in Zomba and Phalombe districts for those affected by Cyclone Freddy.
Banda emphasized the importance of various stakeholders complementing government efforts to improve the lives of families affected by the cyclone.
She also called on other well-wishers to embrace the initiative led by Dozy Mmobuosi, noting that government alone cannot reach everyone in need.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Banda urged the community not to politicize developmental projects taking place in their area. She stressed that survivors require essential resources rather than political disputes.
Dr. Chris Clevely from Dozy Mmobuosi revealed the organization's commitment to promoting the welfare of Cyclone Freddy survivors through comprehensive support, including economic assistance to affected families.
Their plan includes rebuilding 1,000 households across the nation next year, following the completion of 75 households currently underway in Zomba and Phalombe districts.
"We aim to equip everyone affected by Cyclone Freddy with skills and business opportunities to become self-reliant," said Dr. Clevely.
However, he appealed to the Malawi Red Cross Society to expedite the construction of households as the rainy season approaches.
Jane Masamba, one of the survivors and beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude to the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation for their efforts to reconstruct their homes.
She described the hardships faced by survivors who lost everything due to heavy rains in the area.
Construction of households in Zomba and Phalombe is expected to be completed by the end of October 2023.
