Journalists Urged to Hold Leaders Accountable

MZUZU, Malawi - Journalists have been urged to use Access To Information to write more stories on accountability especially related to government funds approved by parliament, write Victor Musongole and Rabecca Kaunda.
The Executive Director for the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency -CSAT Willy Kambwandira, made this call during a half-day media engagement session held on Friday at Grand Palace Hotel attended by Mzuzu based media practitioners on Access to Information-ATI law and parliamentary reporting.
“We believe this is the tool to promote parliamentary accountability. With today's orientation on ATI we expect the media practitioners to demand information from the government and to keep checking on what is happening at the parliament,” Kambwandira said.
He further urged participants to focus much on reporting on how resources that have been approved by parliament are being managed.
“We expect the media to demand information from the government and keep checking on parliament,” Kambwandira said.
On his part, Nyika Media Club Vice Chairperson Feston Malekezo says the meeting is vital in empowering journalists on parliamentary writing and access to information utilization.
"This is very important gesture to us as we have been equipped on how best we can report issues to do with parliamentary despite being far away from the August house," Malekezo said.
The engagement session is one of the activities that CSAT is implementing under the Parliamentary Support program that seeks to among others unpack the Access to information legislation in promoting democratic governance.
