Journalists, Nonprofit Team Up to Aid Expectant Mothers

MZUZU, Malawi — A local nonprofit and journalists joined forces to support new mothers here Sunday, highlighting growing community engagement in maternal health issues, writes Lumbani Kaunda.
Partners for the North (PFN) and Nyika Media Club visited Mzuzu Urban Health Centre.
They distributed baby supplies to expectant and new mothers on Mother's Day.
"Journalism is not just about reporting stories," said Feston Malekezo, Nyika Media Club chairperson.
"It's also about stepping in where humanitarian efforts are needed."
The initiative addressed critical needs at the health centre.
"Many women here come from disadvantaged backgrounds," explained Towera Kasanga Gondwe, a nursing officer.
"They struggle with necessities like baby clothes and supplies."
Masita Jere of PFN praised the partnership's impact.
"Our collaboration with the media has made this impactful visit possible," Jere stated.
New mother Ruth Longwe expressed gratitude for the support.
"Thank you to Nyika Media Club and their partners for your generosity," she said.
The effort also received backing from local businesses.
Nyika Properties and Awalanje Investment Construction and Civil Engineering Company contributed to the initiative.
