Journalists Honoured for Raising Awareness, AfricaBrief Contributor Wins
Caroline Mapando, a contributor to AfricaBrief, was among the winners of the Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards 2023 announced Monday.
BUJUMBURA, Burundi-- African journalists, including a contributor to AfricaBrief, were among the winners of the Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards 2023 announced Monday for raising awareness about sensitive issues such as breaking infertility stigma, supporting girl education, women empowerment, ending child marriage, female genital mutilation and gender-based violence, writes Winston Mwale.
The philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, in partnership with African first ladies serving as ambassadors of the "More Than a Mother" campaign, also honored media for promoting healthy lifestyles and raising awareness about diabetes and hypertension.
"I am proud to announce the winners from Burundi and the rest of Africa. We have 83 winners from 22 African countries," said Sen. Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and president of the "More Than a Mother" campaign.
"Congratulations to all our winners. We started our Media Awards in 2017, and year after year we are witnessing a substantial increase in the number of outstanding and regular entries."
The winners will receive a year's access to the online "MasterClass" training program.
"I would also like to announce the Call for Applications for the Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards 2024 'More Than a Mother' and 'Diabetes and Hypertension,'" Kelej said.
