Japanese Government Commits $5 Million Fertilizer Donation to Malawi
The Japanese government pledges $5 million worth of fertilizer to Malawi to support the country's recovery plan and agricultural sector.
LILONGWE, MALAWI — The Japanese government has announced its commitment to provide a donation of fertiliser worth $5 million to Malawi, as part of its recovery plan to boost the country's economy, writes Judgement Katika.
The announcement was made during a courtesy call by Japanese Ambassador Youichi OYA to Homeland Security Minister Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma at Capital Hill on Tuesday.
The fertiliser donation, which is currently in the procurement stage, will be implemented through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Ambassador OYA emphasised the importance of the partnership between Japan and Malawi, stating, "We are looking forward to helping the Malawi government through the donation of fertiliser, and the two nations will continue working together for the benefit of people from both countries."
In addition to the fertiliser donation, the Japanese government has expressed its commitment to improving security in Malawi by providing training to security officers.
Minister Ng'oma expressed gratitude for the gesture and urged the ambassador to ensure the timely implementation of the project so that people can receive the fertiliser before the rainy season.
This donation is part of Japan's ongoing support to Malawi, as the Japanese government has already committed approximately $2 million for the implementation of projects focusing on peacebuilding, socio-economic empowerment, and climate change adaptation.
