Ivory Bust Nets Two Suspects in Lilongwe

LILONGWE, Malawi - Two men in Lilongwe are behind bars on allegations of being found in possession of four elephant ivory tusks at 6 miles, police said Monday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Inspector Hastings Chigalu confirmed the arrests of the suspects on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024.
He identified the suspects as Alick Akimu, 56, and Rebson Makumba, 42.
According to the spokesperson, detectives received a tip on the day in question that the suspects were offering the ivory for sale at 6 miles.
"After a follow-up, police arrested the suspects and seized the ivory," Chigalu said.
The duo will appear in court to face charges of being found in possession of listed species and dealing in government trophy.
Akimu is from Mtalimanja village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi district, while Makumba is from Mpale village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalemba in Balaka district.
