Innovative Water System Brings Clean Drinking Water to Malawian Villages
Innovation Africa installs solar piped water system, providing clean drinking water to Chalenga and Laisi villages in Mangochi, Malawi.
MANGOCHI, MALAWI — Chalenga and Laisi villages in Mangochi District are celebrating the installation of a solar piped water system by Innovation Africa, writes Bertha Gama.
The project, funded by the Mwendo Group, has brought clean and safe drinking water to over 4,000 villagers.
For years, the people of Chalenga and Laisi villages have faced water challenges, relying on untreated and unprotected water sources.
The lack of access to clean water resulted in a high prevalence of waterborne diseases, including cholera, and the deaths of many community members.
Thanks to the 40,000-liter solar-powered piped water system, the villagers can now enjoy happy and healthy lives.
Chief Chalenga expressed his gratitude, stating, "It was very challenging for us to access safe and clean water for drinking and other domestic purposes, but the installation of this system will improve our livelihood."
The solar-powered piped water system has provided clean drinking water and enabled irrigation farming in the area.
Chief Chalenga reported that approximately 2,500 people from his village benefited from the project.
Eliza Flaxison, a resident of Chalenga Village, shared her joy, saying, "All my life, I was just hearing from other people that people in towns and other villages have access to piped water... But thanks to Innovation Africa because they have turned my imagination into reality."
The project, which cost approximately $65,000, has received praise from local authorities.
Member of Parliament for Mangochi South West, Shadreck Namalomba, commended Innovation Africa for fulfilling the long-standing desire for portable piped water in Chalenga Village.
The initiative has brought peace to the community, as women no longer have to spend hours searching for water, alleviating suspicions of infidelity among couples.
Fred Zuze from Laisi Village spoke in support of the water system, stating, "This intervention will also save our marriages in the villages because many women will no longer have to wake up early in search of water."
The Mwendo Group, composed of individuals from the USA, Israel, England, Tanzania, and other countries, funded the project with $130,000.
Terry Kessel, a representative from Mwendo Group, expressed satisfaction in knowing that the villages now have safe and potable water.
Innovation Africa and the Mwendo Group are determined to continue their efforts, aiming to bring safe and clean water to more hard-to-reach areas.
Their focus extends beyond water provision, encompassing agricultural technologies and solar electricity to improve the lives of people in developing countries.
The installation of the solar piped water system marks a significant milestone for Chalenga and Laisi villages, ensuring access to clean drinking water and promising a brighter, healthier future for the communities affected.
