Illovo Donates K440M Maize Flour to Drought-Hit Villages

CHIKWAWA, Malawi— Illovo Sugar Company donated 16,000 bags of maize flour worth 439.7 million kwacha to 350 households in four villages surrounding its sugar estates Tuesday as part of its social responsibility efforts, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The company's general manager, Ricky Pillay, said the flour went to villages under Paramount Chief Lundu in the district.
"Our collective efforts will make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need help the most," Pillay said.
He said the donation was "a sense of the duty of company for our fellow Malawians" and that Illovo recognizes "access to the basic necessities such as food is the fundamental human right."
Paramount Chief Lundu hailed Illovo for the "timely support" to communities around its estates affected by drought from the harsh El Nino weather phenomenon.
"We are grateful for the donation which is going to take them take," Lundu said.
One beneficiary, Chisomo Damiano, called the 25-kilogram (55-pound) bag of flour "a blessing" for her family of three.
"I am thankful to Illovo Sugar Company for the gesture and other companies should emulate the example set by the sugar company," Damiano said.
