This was announced Wednesday during a media tour organized by the new Southern Region Press Club for members to see construction progress.
BLANTYRE, Malawi- Malawians struggling with cancer will now have hope for treatment following the upcoming launch of the international Blantyre Cancer Centre, a brainchild of business leader Thomson Mpinganjira, writes Elita Nkalo.
According to Alfred Mtetemela, a representative of the state-of-the-art facility, the center located in Nyambadwe will have capacity to treat 30 radiotherapy and 10 chemotherapy patients daily.
This was announced Wednesday during a media tour organized by the new Southern Region Press Club for members to see construction progress.
"The idea for the hospital was conceived after the death of Mpinganjira's wife Babra from cancer," Mtetemela said.
"We believe this will give Malawian and regional cancer patients access to advanced treatment."
Mtetemela said the hospital is in talks with the government on assistance packages and affordability for referrals and local residents.
As of Wednesday, he stated construction is 95% done, with equipment installation remaining.
"The cancer center will be fully operational by January," Mtetemela said.
