Honouring Freedom Fighter Chipembere with New Homes
Chipembere was an influential figure in Malawi's independence movement and a founding member of the Malawi Congress Party alongside Hastings Banda and Orton Chirwa.
MANGOCHI, Malawi - The Malawi government plans to construct two modern houses for the family of the late Masauko Chipembere, a prominent freedom fighter, Minister of Lands Deus Gumba announced Wednesday, writes Maureen Kawerama.
Gumba said the homes will be built in Makumba village in Mangochi-Malindi after he inspected the site where the houses will be constructed.
"Freedom fighters deserve honor, and this is what the government wants to do with Chipembere, whose significant role assisted Malawi in bringing independence from colonial rule," Gumba said.
Chipembere was an influential figure in Malawi's independence movement and a founding member of the Malawi Congress Party alongside Hastings Banda and Orton Chirwa.
He served as minister of education in Malawi's first cabinet but later fell out with Banda and went into exile. He died in exile in 1975.
Peter Rashid, a representative of the Chipembere family, thanked the government, saying this fulfills a request they made recently to President Lazarus Chakwera.
"We are grateful to the president for honouring our late father with these new homes in our home village," Rashid said.
"It shows he is still remembered for his brave fight against colonialism."
