About 142,816 sexually active people in Nsanje are between the ages of 15 and 24.
NSANJE, Malawi— Health authorities in Nsanje are concerned over the growing number of new HIV and tuberculosis infections among youths, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
"It's worrying that the new infections, which are on the rise, are among teenagers," said Edward Mtontholo, in-charge of Sorgin Health Centre.
About 142,816 sexually active people in Nsanje are between the ages of 15 and 24.
"Over 50% of the new infections are happening in adolescent girls and young women," Mtontholo said.
Stella Davie, a mother group champion, urged parents to encourage their daughters to attend school.
"Educating a girl child is educating the nation," she said.
Chamama Jere, a youth mentor at Gaka Community Radio, said the awareness meeting provided information on free health services available to youths.
"As Community Radio, we have trained 14 Youth Reporters who collect materials for the youth magazine program," he said.
