MZIMBA, Malawi— Healing Hands International, in partnership with the Church of Christ, distributed food packs worth K13 million to alleviate hunger in Manyamula, Mzimba district, on Monday, writes Victor Musongole.
The organization plans to distribute an additional 8 million kwacha ($7,400) in food aid to Nsanje district.
Magret Jere from Zikole Sakala village praised the organization's efforts.
"I am happy that the organization's intervention is changing our lives here," Jere said.
"We are grateful for the relief. Apart from that, they taught us how to make cheap fertilizer. My yield has increased by 30% despite the drought."
Mbwenu Chirwa, Healing Hands International's country director, encouraged residents to engage in winter farming during the distribution at Tombolombo in Manyamula.
"This pack of balanced fortified rice is a temporary relief, but people should engage in winter farming and mbeya fertilizer production to increase their yield and be food sufficient," Chirwa said.
He added that about 80% of people taught "farming in God's way" in the area are now food secure.
Group Village Head Longwe Kamanga urged residents to take winter farming and organic fertilizer production seriously to combat food insecurity.
